My name is Mat Budgen, and I'm a designer and maker, creator, teacher, and imaginator. I love producing artefacts from a variety of materials, especially wood. They're usually functional, but sometimes simply sculptural. I mostly make one off objects, but sometimes create a batch.
I love recycling objects to produce sustainable work.
My work involves many types of designing and making, including multi-material coaching and teaching. I enjoy all forms of problem solving and working with clients to meet their needs.
I communicate in many ways, including verbally, through sketching, model making, 2d computer drawing and 3d computer modelling. I'm a keen photographer too, often with natural themes.
The designed and made pages shows pictures of objects that I've made, either as teat pieces, prototypes, presents, etc, which give some idea of the range of objects that I've made.
I'm keen to make objects for people as one-off or limited numbers, and to act as an advisor in methods of production of cretive ideas as models or full-scale realisation.
How it all began
I've been making things for as long as I can remember. I have a photo aged 3 in my mother's arms with a hammer in my arms, and I remember banging nails into scraps of wood and making model planes.
I've always loved telling stories and giving all the details of my adventures etc, which I guess made it inevitable that I'd become a teacher in due course.
Making cards for my family etc has been a lifelong pleasure, and later wedding presents birthday presents etc.
I studied 3d design (Wood Metal Ceramics and Plastics BA)at Brighton University and honed my practical skills, including learning how to wood turn newly felled or green wood.
I've taught Design Technology and assorted subject areas including graphics, computer aided design and computer aided manufacture to secondary school students for many years, passing on my enthusiasm for the subject and love of creativity.
